Wedding Dance

Everyone is talking about the Wedding Dance (I'd love to imbed it but you can't ) - really if you haven't seen it you should check it out.

Apparently a lot of pastors think it is inappropriate for a church wedding and belongs at the reception. I totally disagree. My only caveat is that I would have to actually read the lyrics (since I can't actually understand them) to make sure they were appropiate to a Christian wedding. I doubt it can be worse than the Wedding March (which I ALWAYS discourage but do not forbid because that is just not the hill I want to die on)

But dancing down the aisle? Why not? I always tell my couples that it is the actual ceremony and the vows in particular that are important and how they get to the altar really is immaterial. What is so all fired more holy or religious about the ridiculous two-step that is usually done. Nothing wrong with dancing. Those people look so joyful and happy.

The only problem I see is this --- these people were genuinely joyful, respectful and it looked like there was some forethought and choreography put into this procession. Now EVERYONE is going to want to do this and I'm afraid it's going to get sloppy and people acting stupid. And even some people doing it just for youtube time.

So I'd have to agree to such a procession on a case by case basis.

PS - Just read the lyrics and would have to nix them. "Cause we only got one night" Um, no. So pick another song and you can dance all you want!

  1. Well, I heard a Johnny Cash song played at a church wedding. Well, the couple wasn't religious, but the wedding was in a church.

  2. Johnny Cash sang a lot of Gospel songs so that doesn't seem too strange.

  3. I'm SURE Pastor Awes wouldn't have agreed to any of that - the dancing or the music. I thought he had a "list" of about 15 - 20 appropriate musical selections for weddings. We had "The Wedding Song" as one of our songs (sung by two of my sorority sisters) and I'm sure he wouldn't have agreed to that either.

  4. Hehehe. I actually agreed with Pastor Awes in theory about MOST of his objections but I just never felt it was worth the battle or making brides cry by being too rigid. I have found just telling people about the background of Wagner's Bridal Chorus is enough to scare people off of it...

  5. I had a wedding at Lake Superior (not in church) where the couple used the Austin Powers movie theme for their Recessional music at the end, and the couples did something very similar. I kind of liked it, although I know if they had tried in in a church they would have run into trouble. (for lots of reasons, including the whole recorded music thing).

Maybe that was one of the reasons they decided to get married at the Lake.

  6. Having just gone through a family wedding where my constant theme to the groom, my son, was "the marriage is more important than the wedding." Actually, the wedding was beautiful and simple, just bare bones, but at a beautiful spot. It wasn't cheap because the beautiful spot was to be a formal garden, big bucks, but it was 50 degrees, windy, and rainy, so the wedding was inside and all worked out. But they spent a ton of money on many of the things that go with weddings.

  8. The song was also by Chris Brown, who was recently accused of beating his girlfriend Rhianna. I liked the procession, the fun, the celebration, and the dance. But I would not want Chris Brown starting off my marriage.
