Garden Journal

Started some seeds today. I use the little jiffy things that poof up when you ads water. I have a back enclosed porch that is all windows. I put them on a regular heating pad (about $12 - beats the $50 ones made just for seed starting!. I'll use a reading lamp when they sprout but for the most part the windows are good enough for light.

So here's what I have going

12 Big Mama paste tomaotes
12Viva Italia paste tomatoes
6 early crisp bell peppers
6 jalapenos
3 parsley
6 basil
6 nasturtium
3 summer squash
6 cucumber
6 basil
6 alyssum
3 butterfly weed

I'll be planting more but this is a start.

  1. Wow, that's a lot of tomatoes! I guess that you like canning/eating tomatoes? My husband and I planted about 10 tomato plants a few years ago. We had SO MANY tomatoes that we literally couldn't give them all away and didn't have the time to can them all. This year, I think we're going to keep it to a more modest level.

  2. I do actually can - I don't care for raw tomatoes so all I grow is paste tomatoes and I can sauce. HOWEVER - they might not all make it. Things happen, rabbits and such so I always have a few spare plants just in case. And I give some plants away.

You know you can just stick tomatoes in the freezer and make sauce out of them later - they peel pretty easy once they've been frozen. Sometimes I have to do that if they don't all ripen at the same time so I can them all at once.
