Friday Five - Dorm Life

My daughter Sarah going off to college 2008
This weeks RevGalBlogPals Friday Five:

Mindful that many others are heading off to further schooling or delivering their loved ones to the institutions that provide it, here are five questions about dorm life.

1) What was the hardest thing to leave behind when you went away to school for the first time?

Nothing.  I was glad to get away from home.

2) We live in the era of helicopter parents. How much fuss did your parents make when you first left home?

Bwahahahahaha.  No comment.

3) Share a favorite memory of living with schoolmates, whether in a dorm or other shared housing.

One night it rained really hard and we went out in the courtyard and washed our hair in the rain.

4) What absolute necessity of college life in your day would seem hilariously out-of-date now?
I had a plug in water heater that we figured out how to make  sort of chocolate cookies in it.

5) What innovation of today do you wish had been part of your life in college?
Healthy food choices in the cafeteria.

Bonus question for those whose college days feel like a long time ago: Share a rule or regulation that will seem funny now.

Boys out of the room by 10 pm.

Did you really follow it then?

What do you think?

  1. Some older girls let boys sleep upstairs in the sorority house (against the rules), and they ended up being booted by the National, so I took that stuff seriously. But it wasn't the rule in the dorms in my day.

  2. 1. Probably our pets.
    2. Not much. Dad shook my hand. Mom hugged me and her face got red (like it does when she's trying not to show emotion) and then they left.
    3. The joy of FINALLY moving off-campus to live with housemates, just down the street from Professor Tweet and across from Dr. Parkander.
    4. floppy discs-- 3.5 were new then, I think. The computer lab had WordPerfect 5.1 on all the computers.
    5. I can't think of any innovation I would want to take back to then. Maybe my laptop; the equivalent computer to my macbook would have been extremely large, though, and very heavy and VERY expensive. I think I had a 286 and that was pretty nifty then.

  4. I'll be your hair was super-soft after the rainwater wash! Sounds like fun!

Martha, which sorority? I was in Chi Omega.

Eric, I remember WordPerfect! Liked it better than MS Word, for sure!

  5. 1) Not much, since everything I took was inside a backpack.
    2) A polite goodbye, as I loaded the backpack into my uncle's truck.
    3) Off-color. Nearly all of them. Some wildly so.
    4) A Smith-Corona typewriter. And little sheets of plastic film to type over mistakes.
    5) A computerized card catalog. There is no substitute for hours spent down in the stacks, but neither is there any reason it has to take forever to get there.

And rules? No, not really. I didn't go to that kind of college.

  6. I was a Kappa Alpha Theta. I had a love/hate relationship with the whole thing!
